Hangul, the Korean alphabet, is a complex yet practical writing form and one that has helped graphic designers in the country define a unique visual language. Working with hangul typography requires possessing an uncanny sense of how to create visual balance among square-block characters – and because present-day Korean text can be oriented with either vertical or horizontal alignments, designers have an enviable degree of creative freedom. With Korean movable metal type preceding the Gutenberg printing press by centuries, designers have had time to hone their craft. But with new commissions requiring international appeal, a merger of Eastern and Western styles is being forged by South Korea’s graphic designers.
