Imagination refers to the act of forming a mental image of phenomenon or object that has not been experienced or creating a conception or new imagery not relying on outside stimuli. ‘The Picnic’ is regarded as the act of playing outside, a kind of excursion. We expect the exhibition to serve as ‘playground for imagining’ as the compound vocabulary of its title. As the viewers encounter the exhibition, they would experience and interpret the artwork in their own perspectives, regardless of the artists’ intentions or established explanation. Among the diverse exhibitions in the contemporary era, we place focus on communication with the audience. As Roland Barthes suggested that text is plural, our reaction towards the artwork derives from familiar signs, yet the connection is original and formed differently each time. Likewise, we hope the artworks become a playground for the audience to imagine. ‘Asia Art Festival for Young Artists’ would be an exhibition where the artists and the audience interact not an exhibition with pre-determined interpretation.
‘상상’이란 실제로 경험하지 않은 현상이나 사물에 대하여 마음속으로 그려보는 보거나, 외부자극에 의하지 않고 기억된 생각이나 새로운 심상을 떠올리는 일을 말한다. 그리고 ‘피크닉’은 외부로 나가 노는 일, 일종의 소풍이라 할 수 있다. 우리는 이 단어들의 만남을 통해 이번 전시가 ‘상상하는 놀이터’가 되어, 관객들이 전시를 관람하면서 작가의 의도와 정해진 작품설명이 아닌 관객 스스로가 작품을 느끼고 새로이 해석할 것을 기대한다. 동시대의 다양한 전시 중 우리는 관객과의 소통에 중심을 두었다. 롤랑 바르트가 제시한 텍스트는 복수적이라는 해석에서처럼 우리의 작품에 대한 반응은 잘 알려진 기호들에서 온 것이지만, 그 결합은 독창적이어서 매번 다르게 만들어진다는 것이다. 이처럼 작가들의 작품이 관객들의 상상 놀이터가 되어 해석이 정해진 전시가 아닌 작가와 관객이 소통하는 전시가 되었으면 한다.
