The artists create their stories hidden in their own space. The studio of an artist is not an ordinary space. It is a place for contemplation and where one creates with passion. On the other hand, it is a field for diversion and reset. It may be considered as an ideal space where the complex narrative is embedded and as real space where the artist lives one’s life. “People want the artist to live in the culture, become a part of the culture yet not be too eccentric. At the same time, they expect the artist to deviate from culture and be bizarre. Namely, the artist has to live fantasized life for the others. This is the sustained part of the relationship between the artist and the public.” - Bruce Nauman
As once Bruce Nauman mentioned, people desire the artists to live fantasized life and become a part of the culture. Yet, the artist’s studio remains to be highly private space that is inaccessible without permission. However, they also wish to express themselves. ‘The Artist’s Room’ discreetly peek into their room meeting such needs. We hope the exhibition satisfies the curiosity on living and work of the artists and explains the artist’s life.
작가들은 각자의 공간에 숨어 자신만의 이야기를 만들어 낸다. 작가의 작업실은 일반적인 공간의 의미가 아니다. 이곳은 사색하는 장소이며, 열정으로 새로운 창조물을 만들어 내기도 하며, 한편으로는 놀이의 공간이자 쉼의 공간이 되기도 한다. 다소 복합적인 이야기가 숨어있는 이상의 공간이자 작가의 삶을 살아내는 현실의 공간이라 말할 수 있다. “사람들은 예술가가 문화 속에서 살며 문화의 한 부분이 되고 너무 기이하지 않기를 바란다. 동시에 다른 한편으로는 예술가가 문화에서 다소 이탈되고 기이하기를 기대한다. 즉 예술가는 다른 사람들을 위하여 그들의 환상적 삶을 살아야 한다. 이것이 바로 예술가와 대중 사이에 지속하는 관계의 부분이다.” — 브루스 나우만
브루스 나우만이 이야기처럼 사람들은 예술가들이 환상적인 삶을 살아갈 것을 기대하며, 함께 문화의 한 부분이 되고자 하는 바람을 가지고 있다. 하지만 예술가들의 작업실은 아주 사적인 공간으로 허락하지 않는 한 쉽게 들여다볼 수 없다. 반면, 그들은 자신을 드러내고 싶어 하기도 한다. ‘작가의 방’은 이러한 요구를 해소하고자 그들의 방을 조심스레 엿보고자 한다. 어떠한 모습으로 생활하고 작업을 진행하는지 호기심 가득한 궁금증을 풀어보고 그들의 삶을 이해할 수 있는 전시가 될 것을 기대한다.
