The word ‘salon’ originates from the Italian ‘sala’ which means ‘living room’ in French. From the 17th to 18th century, the word referred to the reception room of the upper class or where the artists gathered. The definition grew to include ‘social gatherings’ and ‘annual art exhibition.’ ‘The Salon’, the special exhibition of ‘Asia Art Festival for Young Artists’ doesn’t adhere to the conventional definition we are aware of. It is not regarded as luxury, gatherings that everyone desire to be part of, or exhibition seeking classical art. The exhibition is aimed to serve as an arena for aspiring artists and young artists at the beginning of their career to interact with others through their original artworks. It presents the coexistence of various ideas. Lastly, the title wittily adopts Gyeongsang Province dialect instead of using standard language, to console and support the young taking a strenuous and demanding journey of an artist.
‘살롱(salon)’의 어원은 이탈리아어의 ‘sala’이며, 프랑스어로 ‘거실’을 뜻한다. 17~18세기에는 예술가들이 모이는 장소이거나 서양 상류 계급의 응접실을 말했으며, 그 외에도 시간이 흐름에 따라 ‘사교적 집회’, ‘미술 정기 전람회’ 등과 같은 다양한 의미를 지니기도 한다. 이번 청년아시아미술제 특별전인 ‘쌀롱’은 우리가 흔히 알고 있는 그 무엇 하나를 지칭하여 의미를 함께하지 않는다. 고급스러움을 의미하는 것도 아니며, 누구나 참여하고 싶어 하는 사교의 장도, 고전적 작품을 추구하는 미술전도 아니다. 작가를 꿈꾸거나 그 길을 걷기 시작한 청년들이 모여, 자신만의 세계로 탄생한 작품으로 다른 이들과 소통할 수 있는 그러한 장을 마련하기 위한 것이며, 다양한 생각이 공존함을 보이기 위한 전시이다. 마지막으로 힘들고 어려운 작가의 길을 걷는 청년들에게 표준어법의 ‘살롱’이 아닌 경상도식의 발음표기인 ‘쌀롱’이라 표기하는 위트로 위로와 응원을 대신한다.
